Physical Therapy Treatments & Objectives
The physical therapy department at Meadville Medical Center is involved with evaluating and treating disorders of the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. The ultimate goal of physical therapy is to restore maximal functional independence to each individual patient. The treatments promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function and prevent disability.
The basic goals of physical therapy are: to relieve pain and discomfort, to regain movement and promote feeling, to restore function to the injured body part, to rebuild confidence and motivate patients to work toward recovery, and to help people adapt to any permanent physical changes.

Spotlight on Aquatic Therapy
Pool services 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday at One Vernon Place
Meadville Medical Center provides skilled aquatic-based physical therapy. Guided by a trained therapist, aquatic therapy provides a low impact option to physical therapy. Water properties, including buoyancy and hydrostatic pressure, allow for decreased impact on joints while still providing resistance for improvements in strength and balance. Warm water temperatures (95 degrees) promotes muscle relaxation and pain relief for a more comfortable workout.
Features of our aquatic pools include an underwater treadmill, providing an opportunity to improve strength and endurance for walking with less impact on joints, and a deep water well which unloads the spine to ease back pain and allow low impact core strengthening.
