Additional Info: This test is also known as “Anti-Microsomal Antibody” and “Microsomal Antibody”. Used in diagnosis of hypothyroidism and thyroiditis.
Approximately 95% of patients with diffuse goiter, hypothyroidism, or both have Anti-TPO. Anti-TPO is especially useful with patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (elevated TSH and normal free T4 concentrations). Many of these patients will develop hypothyroidism.

It is recommended that both Thyroglobulin (antibody) and Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody be ordered together as in Thyroid Antibody Group, Serum since autoimmune thyroiditis may demonstrate a response to antigens other than thyroid microsomes.

Specimen Requirements:
1 yellow-top SST tube (minimum: 1.0 mL of serum). Centrifuge SST 30 minutes after draw. Refrigerate specimen after collection.
