Reducing Substance Stool

Useful For: The presence of reducing substances is useful in the diagnosis of abnormalities in carbohydrate metabolism, i.e., sucrose and lactase. The unabsorbed sugars in stool are measured as reducing substances.

Methodology: Benedict’s solution

Specimen Requirements: Collect 5.0-10.0 gm of fresh stool in a plastic, leakproof container. Refrigerate specimen after collection. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Analytical Time: 2 days

Days Set Up: Monday through Friday
