Detection of intrathecally-produced organism-specific antibodies in CSF indicates central nervous system infection. HHV-6 is a distinct herpes virus that typically causes a self-limiting illness in patients who are not immunocompromised. In some patients, especially if immunocompromised, HHV-6 can cause febrile convulsions in infants, encephalitis, infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms, and hepatitis.
Methodology: Immunofluorescence Assay
Specimen Requirements:
1 yellow-top SST tube (minimum: 0.5 mL of serum). Centrifuge SST 30 minutes after draw. Refrigerate specimen after collection.
Analytical Time: 3-4 days
