Cultures of the nasopharynx or pharynx are not useful for establishing the etiology of middle ear infection.

Specimen Requirements:
Culturette® swab of affected area or submit corneal scrappings in a screw-capped, sterile container supplied by Meadville Medical Center Laboratory. Refrigerate specimen after collection. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
NOTE: CULTURE SITE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING
Specimen unacceptable if over 24 hours old.
